8/25 Sightseeing with Downings

8/25

9:30 – Going with Downings – 9:45 Donna and Terrie just realized we were ready. We went to Boulder Hot Springs Hotel and Spa. It was built in 1880's for workers on the railroad. It was a grand hotel that attracted people for the therapeutic hot springs. It had sat empty for 40 years but is being rehabbed.

We explored 2 old mine ruins that are now ghost towns. (Elkhorn and Comet) The history represented by these places is hard to imagine. We went in Downings Dodge V10, 4wd pickup, over mountains to places that were so beautiful and interesting you'll have to see the pictures to appreciate it.

8/24 Left Cody, WY, headed to Downings

8/24

Left Cody, WY at 8:45 – Drama over – found my PDA. It rained through the night. Cloudy now. Yellowstone had a lot of pretty areas, such as Keppler Cascade but many areas were either burned over or with large areas of dead areas of dead trees on the mountain sides. (Mountain Pine Needle).
Yellowstone Lake is huge and very neat with many areas of thermal fields around the edge Old Faithful cooperated and blew about ½ hour after we arrived. In Yellowstone we saw buffalos and elks. The trip out of Yellowstone towards Downings was spectacular, Hwy 191 runs along Madison River, Galatine river and other much of the way. The streams and surrounding mountains make it worthwhile to go slower.

Arrived at Downings at 6:30 pm. We have a wonderful time in the evening. Didn't go to bed until after midnight.

8-23-2009 Rapid City, Sturgis/Deadwood and Big Horn National Forest

We left Rapid City at 9:00am.  We went to Deadwood, SD, an old western town.  There was a classic auto rally and parade going on.  We can see why the bikers and classic auto enthusiasts have adopted the Sturgis/Deadwood, SD and Black Hills area.

When we exited I-90 toward Buffalo, WY on our way to Cody, WY we stopped for lunch, then we entered Big Horn National Forest.  We saw snow on the mountain tops.  This area is amazing.  Quite spectacular, I hope the pictures do it justice.  The pictures of the mountain river was Tensleep Creek.

We arrive in Cody at 5:00.  Tomorrow we are off to Yellowstone and Montana.

Have a good day.
